White wine: the perfect combinations

Descriptions of wine varieties & appropriate foods for South Tyrolean whites
 
Weissburgunder: an elegant scent of apples, lively acidity. A fruity finesse developed in oak barrels. Recommended with light starters, fish, dumplings and as aperitif. Serving temperature: 10-12°C.

Chardonnay: fine acidity and elegant aromas of pineapple, bananas, apples, pears, citrus fruits and vanilla. Recommended with fish and seafood, light meat, risotto, cheese gnocchi. Serving temperature: 10-14°C.

Sauvignon Blanc: light “green” aromas of fresh grass, elderflowers, gooseberries. Depending on maturity, crisp and fresh or intense and hefty. Recommended with asparagus, grilled vegetables, fish, goat’s cheese. Serving temperature: 10-12°C.

Gewürztraminer:
a genuine aromatic variety with intensive colour and sumptuous texture. Rose petals, carnations, lychees, tropical fruits. A popular wine for meditation. Recommended as an aperitif, with Asian dishes, shellfish (dry wine), goose liver, pastries (wines with residual sweetness), desserts and tangy cheeses (sweet wine).

Pinot Grigio: full on the palate and flowery. Lime tree blossoms, depending on growing area delicately fresh or minerally. Recommended with stronger fish dishes, South Tyrolean specialities. Serving temperature: 10-14°C.

Riesling: a sophisticated, noble variety. In the Vinschgau it has fine peach and citrus aromas and a lively acidity. Recommended with seafood, oysters, Asian dishes, starters. Serving temperature: 10-12°C.

Kerner: a classy, tangy wine with nutmeg notes. Abundant aroma with a fruity bouquet. Recommended with stronger starters, grilled fish, vegetable terrines. Serving temperature: 10-12°C.

Müller Thurgau: a lively, aromatic wine, with fine minerally notes and an unobtrusive scent of apples, elderflowers. Recommended with light starters, fried freshwater fish, cream cheese and as an aperitif. Serving temperature: 10-12°C.

Goldmuskateller:
a distinctive sweet aroma. A popular dessert wine (Passito Sissi)  and a perfect aperitif wine (dry in the “Graf von Meran” line).  Recommended as an aperitif, with desserts, ripe blue cheeses. Serving temperature: 8-12°C.
